Started in 2001, the .NAME universal TLD is the only one intended for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to book john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased third-level domains remained operational.
